Cecil Beaton, Japanese

Beaton, Cecil. Japanese. First Edition. 1959. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—jacket shows scrape across front cover but is otherwise bright and attractive.

In the winter of 1957, Cecil Beaton accompanied Truman Capote on a journey to Japan to gather information for a story Capote was writing for Harper’s Bazaar on the Marlon Brando vehicle Sayonara, filming on location there. Capote used half-truths and charm to cajole a reluctant Brando into giving him an interview (which Brando came to regret). Beaton took the high road, making the journey into an exquisite book—an album of b & w photographs and pen & ink drawings. Beaton collaborated with the publisher on an innovative design. One page from each chapter folds out, and provides captions for all images of that chapter.
